Proverbs 13

Continuing my reading through Proverbs this month. I’m in chapter 13 today. Many of these proverbs reminded me of passages elsewhere.

The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. (13:9)

I wonder if Jesus was thinking of this proverb when he spoke his own: “Let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

An unreliable messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. (13:17)

I want God to consider me a faithful envoy: “In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them, and he has given us the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:19).

The one who associates with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (13:20)

There’s a reason parents want to know who their kids are hanging out with. “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals’” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren… (13:22)

I think that’s just a cool mental picture.
